The Process

How Multi Jet Fusion Works

MJF builds dense, functional polymer parts by applying fusing and detailing agents across a nylon powder bed, then fusing everything in a single infrared pass — layer by layer.

Step 01

File Prep & Nesting

Files are reviewed, oriented for optimal mechanical performance, and nested into the build volume to maximize density and reduce per-part cost.

Step 02

Agent Application

Inkjet printheads deposit a fusing agent (to bond particles) and a detailing agent at part edges for sharp, accurate surfaces across each powder layer.

Step 03

Infrared Fusion

An infrared energy source fuses agent-treated powder into solid nylon. Untreated areas remain as loose powder — the natural support structure.

Step 04

Extraction & Finishing

Parts are unpacked, media-blasted, and move to finishing — from as-built MJF gray to DyeMansion vapor smoothing and deep dye for production-ready results.

Material

MJF Material at SNL Creative

We run HP Multi Jet Fusion with Nylon PA12 — the production standard for MJF, delivering the density, accuracy, and surface quality that functional and end-use parts demand.

HP 3D HR PA 12

Nylon PA12

HP 3D High Reusability PA 12

The industry benchmark for MJF production. PA12 delivers high part density, strong chemical resistance, and excellent dimensional stability — from functional prototypes through to end-use production runs. Compatible with the full DyeMansion post-processing line for vapor smoothing and deep dye colorization.

Mechanical Properties

  • Tensile strength ~48 MPa (XY) / ~45 MPa (Z)
  • Elongation at break ~20% XY / ~15% Z

In-House Post-Processing

DyeMansion Finishing — On Site

Most MJF service bureaus send parts out for post-processing. At SNL Creative, our DyeMansion line is fully in-house — tighter quality control, faster turnaround, and no surprises between print and finish.

Powerfuse S — Vapor Smoothing

Chemical vapor smoothing reduces surface roughness from Ra ~10–14 µm (as-built) to Ra <1 µm. Parts become water-tight, paintable, and carry a professional molded look without losing dimensional accuracy.

DM60 — Deep Dye

Production-quality colorization that penetrates deep into the nylon — not a surface coating. Parts emerge with rich, consistent color and UV-stable pigment that holds up in demanding environments.

Media Blasting, Priming & Painting

Beyond DyeMansion, we offer media blasting for as-built surface prep, primer and paint for custom color matching, and assembly services for multi-part builds.

Industries Served

Who Uses MJF 3D Printing

From prototype to production, MJF bridges the gap across demanding industries that need functional polymer parts fast.

Aerospace & Defense

Lightweight brackets, ducts, enclosures, and tooling aids meeting demanding mechanical standards without the lead time of traditional manufacturing.

Automotive & EV

Interior components, sensor housings, mounting brackets, and end-of-arm tooling for prototype validation and short-run production.

Robotics

Structural frames, end effectors, cable management, and custom enclosures benefiting from MJF's isotropic strength and geometry freedom.

Custom-fit gear, helmet liners, lattice midsoles, and protective equipment where PA12 density and surface finish meet performance requirements.

Consumer Goods

Production runs of enclosures, wearable devices, and accessories where MJF surface finish and tight tolerances compete with injection-molded aesthetics.

Entertainment & Fashion

Props, accessories, and wearable set pieces produced with the surface quality and schedule flexibility creative industries demand.

Common Questions

MJF 3D Printing — FAQ

Everything you need to know before sending your first MJF job.

Multi Jet Fusion is a powder bed fusion technology from HP that uses inkjet arrays to apply fusing and detailing agents across a nylon powder bed, fused with infrared energy. The result is dense, isotropic parts with excellent mechanical properties — produced faster and more cost-effectively than SLS for most production runs.

We process Nylon PA12 (HP 3D High Reusability PA 12) — the industry-standard MJF material offering high part density (~95–98%), strong chemical resistance, excellent dimensional stability, and full compatibility with DyeMansion vapor smoothing and deep dye post-processing.

MJF applies liquid agents across the entire powder bed simultaneously — enabling faster cycle times and more consistent part density than SLS, which uses a laser to sinter powder point-by-point. MJF typically yields slightly better isotropy and surface finish out of the machine. Both produce strong parts without support structures.

Our DyeMansion line is fully in-house: Powerfuse S vapor smoothing (Ra <1 µm, water-tight surface) and DM60 deep dye for production-quality color. We also offer media blasting, priming, painting, and assembly.

Yes. MJF PA12 is well-suited to end-use production — especially low-to-mid volume runs where injection molding tooling costs are prohibitive. Parts achieve densities of approximately 95–98% and meet demanding mechanical requirements across industries.

The HP Multi Jet Fusion 5200 series offers a build volume of 380 × 284 × 380 mm. Nesting allows us to pack multiple parts efficiently, reducing per-part cost on production runs.

MJF is used across aerospace and defense, automotive and EV, robotics, sporting goods, consumer goods, and entertainment. SNL Creative serves all these verticals from our Cypress, CA facility.
